Talking Head

In a talking head video, a person speaks directly to the camera, and the shot usually shows only the subject’s shoulders and up. This format is one of the simplest and most widely used in video production, particularly for television and YouTube videos.

The purpose of a talking head video is to create a personal and direct experience for the audience, making them feel as if they are having a one-on-one conversation with the speaker.

What is Talking Head in animation?

A Talking Head video style in animation is an animated segment where the subject is a character (realistic, cartoon, etc.) speaking directly to the audience.

But instead of showing the full subject and its body movements, the focus is on the character’s head and mouth movements as they deliver dialogue or important information to build a story.

A Talking Head format in animation is typically used for:

  • Explainer videos – Animated characters speaking directly to the viewer.
  • Training or e-learning content – Virtual teachers guiding learners through lessons.
  • AI or virtual presenters – Avatars that mimic human facial expressions and speech.

How is a Talking Head used in video production?

A Talking Head video is not new to many producers and directors around the world. It is widely used in video production because it’s a straightforward and simple setup: a single person delivering information on camera, usually without or with minimal background distractions.

A lot of people also use Talking Head in video production because of its goal, which is to keep the focus on the speaker’s words and expression. This is why this style is very popular in business updates, educational content, news, and online tutorials.

Examples and application of a Talking Head video

Not all Talking Head videos look or should look the same. Here are some common examples and styles:

  • Traditional talking head style video – A news setup with a person usually against a simple background.
  • Talking head video with animation or overlays – The speaker is shown while text, slides, or graphics appear on screen.
  • Talking head AI video – Virtual avatars or synthetic presenters generated by AI.
  • Talking head video for business – It is a professional setup in which company leaders or employees deliver announcements, messages, or product updates.
